Alexis Howard

Bio:

I was born in Wilmington, North Carolina. I am currently a candidate for a B.F.A. in Art with a concentration in commercial photography at Winthrop University. My interest in photography first began when I made black and white silver gelatin prints in the darkroom. My experience with 35mm, medium format, and large format film influenced my work, training me to view digital photography in a different way by causing me to slow down and pay attention to the smallest details. My time at Winthrop has allowed me to explore many different alternative processes that involve coating drawing paper by hand with light sensitive chemistry. The processes included Cyanotype, Van Dyke, Albumen, Gum Bichromate, Argyrotype, Platinum, and Salt Prints.

Artist Statement:

In this series I combine natural elements and portraiture through the use of digital photography. My compositions often include painted backdrops with soft lighting and digital manipulation. My use of bright, sometimes calming colors, contrasts with the emotion evoked by the subject.
